Here I am at last with the twenty fourth installment of my Morning Coffee & Sketch series; my schedule has slightly changed over the past fortnight and that’s why this series has been a bit more sporadic but on the bright side, there are a few more finished artworks coming as soon as they are dry enough to scan!
Every now and then I like to step away from my Leaves of Hellebore project and work on other things that inspire me, two of these are Tolkien’s legendarium and Vikings. I have a couple of Vikings paintings coiming, one is in the process of being painted which you can follow the progress of by following me on Instagram – @JGloverArt and the other as seen from the last two Morning Sketches in still in the planning and development stage.
The next detailed drawing I’m working on is a piece inspired by the Lord of the Rings and so is this sketch for this morning, so without further ado, here’s the sketch –

This morning’s Coffee & Sketch is a continuation of the last one; I have been planning out a new painting of a Viking invasion fleet so all of my sketching work has been aimed towards that goal; drawing and simplifying longships as well as trying to study the ocean and the way waves work in terms of light and shadow.
Without further ado, here is the morning’s sketches –

Welcome to my Morning Coffee & Sketch series; today’s sketch or sketches, are the beginning stage of planning a new oil painting.
It is another Viking/Norse inspired piece and that now means the next two paintings are of that genre and I can’t wait to get stuck into it; I find the Viking/Norse culture a highly interesting one and it’s a subject that has fascinated me since I was a child so these next two projects will be very enjoyable.
I’m also trying something different for this piece and I have chosen to paint on a 20″ x 8 ” canvas and the idea of working on an oblong space is entirely new with the painting side of things at least. The canvas size has a 2:5 ratio so I drew my thumbnails at 4 cm x 10 cm and here they are –

Welcome to my Morning Coffee & Sketch series; it has been a great journey so far, I have learned an awful lot as well as loosened up with my sketching. The ideas flow nicely and many of which will eventually become fully detailed artworks; I’m working on two at the moment which will soon become oil paintings.
Anyway straight to it this morning as I’m already running late, I had to run an errand earlier this morning and that threw a bit of a spanner in the works but I’ve managed to knock up a quick sketch and get this post in order to publish.
Here’s today’s sketch –

Welcome to another milestone post in my Morning Coffee & Sketch series; this morning we return to a sketch created for my Leaves of Hellebore visual fantasy novel!
Today’s coffee of choice is a standard Americano served in the largest cup I have which is probably double the size of a normal one; I needed it this morning.
Moving on, here is today’s sketch –

Welcome to my Morning Coffee & Sketch series, I don’t usually post one over the weekend and as far as I can remember this is the first time I have; but I couldn’t resist getting a sketch out this morning.
I had a really productive day yesterday with painting and I have no almost completed the oil painting of the first piece of the main storyline for my Leaves of Hellebore visual fantasy novel. Also today I’ll be starting on another drawing for the history and lore of the world I am creating for that IP.
Moving on anyway, this morning’s sketch is another inspired by the History TV show Vikings.

Welcome to the eighteenth installment of my Morning Coffee & Sketch series!
This morning I have decided to draw on another show that inspires me in a very big way; History Channel’s TV series Vikings. The show is so rich and everything from the landscape to the costume design and the casting is second to none in this field.
I decided to do a quick sketch inspired by the show’s main protagonist Ragnar Lothbrok. I didn’t go for an exact likeness but whilst sketching it occurred to me that I will create a more detailed piece of Ragnar further down the line, his character is a very interesting one and his image is insanely inspiring.
Anyway, here’s the sketch –

Welcome to my Morning Coffee & Sketch series, for today’s sketch I took a bit of a different path; instead of sketching an idea for my Leaves of Hellebore project I decided to do a little fan art sketch; sometimes I find it helpful to take a step back from a project and go back to my roots to find some inspiration.
So in this vain I decided to do a quick sketch of a scene from the Lord of the Rings movies that has stuck with me since I first saw it, Frodo in Shelob’s Lair with the Phial of Galadriel.

Welcome to my Morning Coffee & Sketch series, as with the last two posts of this series I have used architectural ruins as my subject again; I love ruins and I think they tell a wonderful story of their own without the need for prompting or posing. It has also been a great learning curve playing loosely with perspective and sketching stonework.
Before I move onto the sketch for this morning though, I recently started working on a previous Morning Sketch concept and turning it into a finished artwork, you can see the process of that here – The Last Flight of the War Drakes.
Now for this morning’s sketch!

Welcome to part fifteen of my Morning Coffee & Sketch series, in honour of keeping the momentum I have another sketch and have ingested another ton of caffeine since the last post yesterday!
For this sketch I decided to use the sanguine pastel pencil again on the watercolour paper that I stained with the nut brown ink a while back, it’s a nice feeling working on a toned paper the form just seems to appear immediately.
Anyway, here is this morning’s sketch –
