Monthly Instagram Roundup – Feb 2019
The Journey Thus Far…
So to introduce this new feature I guess the title does all the necessary summing up of what it’s about and I can pretty much jump straight into getting to the pictures part.
Just before that however, I must admit that this first post has a couple of photos taken before February 2019 that just couldn’t be left off and as this is a new feature it made sense that I’d get away with it this once.
All of the photos are my own, taken with either my phone or digital camera and then edited solely using Instagram.
I hope that you enjoy this selection of my favourite photos that I’ve taken and posted to Instagram, please feel free to follow me on there and start a conversation!

It was after nightfall when they had entered the Mines. They had been going for several hours with only brief halts, when Gandalf came to his first serious check.
After some time toying with the idea of revisiting the scene of Gandalf in Moria in more detail, I have finally managed to make the journey into the depths of the Mines and throw together a new artwork. It has been both an interesting and perilous journey, one full of inspiration and excitement and fair few lessons learned in the process.
For this illustration, we head to The Lord of the Rings – The Fellowship of the Ring, Book Two, Chapter IV – A Journey In The Dark.

The Breaking of the Fellowship!
A poignant scene in the final chapter of The Fellowship of the Ring – Book Two has served as the inspiration for a new artwork that I will be working on in oil paints in the coming months; for now though I have worked up a preparatory drawing in charcoal that will serve as my go to reference for the work ahead.
For this post I won’t be delving too deep into the writing itself, I like to save that for the final post with the finished painting like I did recently with ‘The Passage of the Marshes’.
I will however do a little bit of digging in order to set the scene nicely!

Lots of Variety for Today’s Post…
A couple of weeks ago I finally got around to attending a life drawing session. They are few and far between in the county that I live in, traveling to London isn’t a realistic option so I have to rely on local sessions; having found one only a 20 minute drive from home I am now set on making it a habit.
We’ll begin today’s post with the results of that life drawing session, I haven’t drawn from a live model since I was in college so I had a lot of loosening up to do and rust to clean off, I think I’ll fair better after a few more sessions…

This week has been slightly slower on the art creating front for me so I decided to do something a little different in order to ensure getting a worthwhile post published and sticking to my new posting schedule of every Sunday.
For this post, we’ll be taking a brief look at an incredible piece of work from the amazing artist Jerry Vanderstelt!

The Nazgul Have Returned!
Well, in terms of my latest oil painting on the easel anyway…
I’ve been getting up earlier than necessary for work over the past week and sneaking in a 30-40 minute painting session in order to work my way back into this piece and make some serious headway. It’s proved productive and the painting is now at a stage where all I need to do is go over the figures and the render the finishing details, not long now and we’ll have another piece for the portfolio.
Anyway, let’s get to the artwork!

Back to the Sketchbook!!!
Over the past couple of weeks I have made it my goal to get up half an hour earlier than I need to get ready for work and to get some quick sketching time in the mornings.
Using this time has been a great help for me to form this sketching habit and I’ll be using to cover a range of themes and subjects, I began with still life drawing, next week maybe I’ll do some master studies.
Another bonus aspect is that with it being so early in the morning, tight detailed drawings are not the way; this helps me to keep the sketches loose and fluent.
