The Legend of Zelda – Final Piece

Today was the final day of the Legend of Zelda project that I’ve been working on and the conclusion of the project also brings about the completed final painting.

This has been a fairly brief project, although not as brief as I would have liked but painting is still a huge learning curve for me; and for this piece I used watercolours, which can be an unpredictable medium at the best of times. I actually had two attempts at the painting which I destroyed before tackling the third and finding an approach that worked without ruining the piece.

Working in watercolour for this painting definitely taught me a lot about the medium and also enhanced my eagerness to get back to learning oils, there’s just something about oil paint that feels much more natural for my working style; so in future or for the foreseeable future at least, I’ll be saving watercolour for colour studies and colour comps for later oil paintings.

Anyway, back to the point at hand, let’s get the painting out –

Overall I am happy with how this piece came out, what I learned in the process and the fact that it has settled an urge to produce a piece of art for my favourite childhood video game.

In the future I intend to do a painting of adult Link and I’ll do that one oil paint, although that’s in the distant future for now, maybe I’ll leave it seven years considering that’s the time lapse between the two versions of Link in the Ocarina of Time.
